I had the pleasure of meeting Arike Ogunbowale.
She came toward me on a scooter, zipping past just as I held out a paper. She smiled — and missed it. I thought she was gone.
But no. She whipped around like she was cutting back to the top of the key. What a smile that woman has. So warm. So welcoming.
She asked what I had. I said, "A compliment for you. I just want to make sure you're feeling great before you play."
She smiled again and scooted off — quick and clean, the way her threes go up.
What a pleasure.
I met Britt Price today, and what a beautiful lady with class.
She could not have been more lovely. Confidence shines off her so bright, I was glad I had my shades on.
Here I am, an old woman asking her to compliment Nebraska. Honey, she already does. She has been complimenting Nebraska her whole life. Four straight state titles at Elkhorn North. Two-time Player of the Year. First Team All-Big Ten. Then the portal opened and half the country called, and she stayed home. That is a compliment to a whole state, and she said it without saying a word.
But here is the part I like best. She is a two-time Tom Osborne Citizenship Team pick. Ninety little girls showed up to her camp in Elkhorn wearing her jersey and her headband. She gives it back. That is not something you can practice into a person. That comes from her family.
She was kind. She was polite. She really listened to an old lady, and she said she would take a look.
