Compliment ideas

Never wonder what to say.

Starters for every person in your life. Each one has blanks, because the best compliment has something true and specific in it. Pick a group, fill in the blanks, then say it.

The formula

“You what they did. It why it mattered.”

Specific. About them. Says why it mattered. That is the whole skill. Check yours for sincerity →

At work

Compliments for coworkers

  • “You stayed late to fix it. Because of you, we made it.”
  • “When the system broke, you were the calm one. That helped all of us.”
  • “Thanks for giving me credit for the idea in the meeting. That meant a lot.”
  • “You make that job look easy, and I know it isn’t.”

At work

Compliments for your boss

  • “Thank you for covering my shift when I needed it. It made me want to work harder.”
  • “You explained the change in a way I finally understood.”
  • “I know that was not an easy call. I think it was the right one.”

For leaders

Compliments for your team

  • “Two tools broke and you still got 5¾ jobs done. You did good.”
  • “I noticed how you handled that customer. That is exactly what we need here.”
  • “You turned the project around. That took real grit.”
  • “Go home and feel better. Thanks for telling me instead of toughing it out.”

Healthcare

Compliments for nurses and caregivers

  • “You made the hardest night less scary. Thank you.”
  • “You treated my mom like family.”
  • “You explained everything so we could understand it. That mattered.”

At school

Compliments for teachers

  • “You never let me give up on math. Today I didn’t.”
  • “Thank you for noticing when I was having a hard day.”
  • “Because of your class, I love reading now.”

At home and school

Compliments for kids

  • “You kept trying on that puzzle until you got it. That’s what hard work looks like.”
  • “I saw you share with your friend. That was kind.”
  • “You went from a D to a C. I can see how hard you worked.”

Family

Compliments for parents and grandparents

  • “Thank you for every early morning. I see it now.”
  • “I still use what you taught me about cooking.”
  • “You made our house feel like home.”

Friends

Compliments for friends

  • “You always know when to call. Thank you.”
  • “You showed up when I moved. I won’t forget it.”
  • “Being around you makes me braver.”

Out and about

Compliments for strangers and service workers

  • “You’re handling this line like a pro. Thank you.”
  • “You remembered my order. You made my morning.”
  • Tell their manager on the way out. It counts twice.

You count too

Compliments for yourself

  • “I showed up today, even though I was tired. That counts.”
  • “I handled that conversation better than last time.”
  • “I am getting better at asking for help.”

Watch out for

Three ways a compliment goes wrong.

  • A hidden insult“Your hair looks so much better now” says the old hair was bad. Praise what is, not what was.
  • A compliment with a favor attached“You’re amazing, can you cover my shift?” feels like buttering up. Ask first, compliment after.
  • Too general to mean anything“Good job” could be said to anyone. Name the exact thing.

Pick one. Fill in the blanks. Say it today.
